Update 25th Dec 2016

The brushtails are all present and healthy. The ringtails have been visiting less often, with only Ruby, Koji and Wasabi having been seen in the past few days.

Mischa is doing well and seems to be evading attacks by the larger possums. His eye wound is now only barely visible.

Sasha is looking weighed down by her latest baby, although looks can be deceptive and she is quite capable of vigorously chasing off Mischa when she sees him.

One time when seen recently, Wasabi was acting nervous. At the time the photo below was taken, Mischa was wandering around on the ground below (having been chased there by Sasha) so it could just be that he has a (quite sensible) fear of animals moving around on the ground.

However, there could be pythons around (although no more have been sighted), leading to a general nervousness amongst the ringtails. When last seen, Koji was sticking close to his mother Ruby.

Meanwhile Ruby's pouch is now plump with another lot of babies.

The possum boxes have been very popular lately, with four possums (including Sasha's new baby) being seen in the boxes on a couple of days.

The brush turkey has been named Gatsby.

Gatsby resting near his mound - 2nd Dec 2016

He continues to work on his mound, which he guards quite determinedly. He seems to regard the entire back yard as his personal property. At one stage I went to bury some food scraps in the compost heap and he followed me all of the way there, then started kicking dirt at me. I'm not sure if it was his way of telling me to leave or whether he was saying something like "Stupid human! That's no way to build a mound! Let me show you how to do it."

So far at least one of his chicks has hatched.  Hopefully we'll see more soon.
