Sprout is mostly back-riding and keeps close to her mother Blossom, but occasionally will run off a short distance with food torn from Blossom's mouth.

Update 21st December 2022

For several days now, two of the three young males, Aeon and Rae, have not been visiting. They are still a bit young to go off on their own to seek new territories, however in both cases their mothers' territories are mostly outside the area of the house, so maybe they don't feel safe intruding into an area which isn't their own and which is filled with other increasingly hostile possums.

Since the last entry, Marlowe, Zoë, Akira and Nikita have showed up and for a while there were a lot of possums visiting. Now, however, a carpet python has appeared and the possums are making themselves scarce again. Here is a photo of Akira soon after he reappeared:

I'll start with a photo of Sasha. Sasha is in good health and has a noticeable baby in the pouch. It might not be long before we see the baby at least partially out of the pouch when Sasha is in the nestbox, especially if we get some hot weather.

About two weeks ago, there was a visitation by a 2 m carpet python. At that time, the possums, who had previously been visiting regularly (often as many as five possums would appear together at 6:40 pm) went into hiding. I had been waiting for them to reappear before posting again - or at least that's my excuse for not posting in a while.

I am pleased to report that, since Niva reappeared yesterday, all of the regular possums (except for Mischa, who was expected to leave the area sometime soon and has grown into a big strong possum, so is unlikely to have been eaten)  have now been accounted for. It makes sense that Niva, who is the smallest of the possums, and an easy meal for a python, would remain in hiding the longest.

I would also like to mention, in case anyone's wondering, that cyclone Debbie [I'm disappointed they missed the opportunity to name it Donald] didn't affect Possum TV. There were no strong winds here and only about a day and a half of continuous, but not particularly heavy, rain. We are too high up for flooding, so the main effect was that the possums had an unpleasant couple of nights out in the wet.

When Niva reappeared, Wasabi was watching over her. It has been interesting to see how Koji (her older brother) and Wasabi (her father) have been taking turns taking care of her.

Update 29th Nov 2016

With the exception of Toto, who I'm thinking has probably left the area, all of the possums are still around. Ruby's babies Keeta and Koji visit frequently. I don't think I have mentioned what genders these two were - it can be hard to tell when they're just a little ball of fur - but now it's clear that Keeta is female and Koji is male.

Keeta is much more assertive than her older sister Maple when approaching the humans for food.

Update 7th Dec 2014

Comet has now progressed to the stage where Kiki only barely tolerates his presence, and he is well aware of this fact.

If he is in a tree nearby when Kiki is being fed, which is happening less and less often, he often scampers off when Kiki makes a sudden move towards him.

Kiki and Oz are visiting regularly and in good health. Oz is back-riding, but occasionally ventures off a short way on his own.

Update 21st August 2013 - Kiki's baby now back-riding

A couple of days ago, Kiki turned up with her latest baby back-riding. This is the first time I've seen the baby directly. Here's a photo of the pair.

Update 30th June 2013

Kiki, Spock and Wasabi are all healthy and visiting regularly. Pinot hasn't been seen for a while, but that's normal for him. The new male brushtail that appeared last month has visited the possum boxes a few times, but still hasn't visited the house.

Wasabi has been seen a couple of times with a baby possum in tow. He hasn't brought the baby close enough for a good look, so it's not clear whether this is Vindi.

On one hand, this possum looks a bit small to be Vindi (this one is roughly the same size as Vindi was in March) and looks to have less white on the tail, but on the other hand is too big to be a new baby - unless there's another mother ringtail in the area.

News in brief: A ceiling possum, a marauding possum, a python, a brave Kiki, and Pinot stops by for a visit.

For a couple of weeks recently, Spock made his home in the ceiling. Here's a photo of him peeping out from behind a light fitting.

Update 19th December 2012

There haven't been any updates for a while because I've been away for work.

Since my last post, only Kiki, Svejk and Pinot have been visiting with any regularity and now even Svejk hasn't been seen for several days. Here are some recent photos of the three:

Possum Status Update 28th Sept 2012

More pythons. This time a 2 m long one (that is to say, half way between Morlock and Grendel in size) descended through the trees in the possum feeding area.

Possum Status Update 16th Sept 2012

Still no sign of Nosferatu. At this stage we're assuming he has met with some accident; either a python or one of the other many hazards a possum has to put up with.

Another new male possum has been seen in the area. It's possible that this possum is Dexter, who visited very briefly in May last year.
